I always learn something from http://mashable.com. Whether its education policy, social media tactics, or marketing mistakes done in the open, they have the best articles.
My fav this week is “Student Uses Facebook to Organize Massive High School Walkout.” This young woman organized much of her town and neighborhood to walk out and protest the New Jersey Governor’s cuts to the education budget.
Writes Mashable, “The event was organized by 18-year-old Michelle Ryan Lauto — a Pace University student who once attended high school in New Jersey. Lauto decided to take action after Governor Chris Christie announced that he would be cutting $820 million in educational funding for next year, according to the Hartford Courant.”
The Facebook page had 15,000 RSVPS for “yes” and many schools joined the walkout. Coverage has included, AP, FOX News, the Star Ledger, and the New York Times blog. Google’s current count of news stories, 234. Not too shabby from a publicity standpoint.
We don’t know what the outcome will be, or if the Governor will now think twice about such a massive cut, but it’s nice to know that teens have an outlet at their disposal to organize and let their voices be heard.
